Nifty 50 & Bank Nifty Outlook for August 21: Nifty Breaks 24,250, But Is the Rally Sustainable?

Nifty 50 Outlook: Breakout Above 24,250, But Bears Still Have the Edge

The Nifty 50 staged a strong comeback on August 20, closing at 24,232, up 154 points (+0.64%). The index finally broke its unusual 12-session streak of failing to break the previous day's high, marking a notable change in short-term market momentum.

Nifty 50 & Bank Nifty Outlook for August 21: Nifty Breaks 24,250, But Is the Rally Sustainable?

One of the biggest positives was the sharp decline in India VIX, which fell around 5% during the session and closed below 11. The drop in volatility suggests that immediate market fear has eased significantly.

However, despite today's strong rally, Nifty has not yet delivered a decisive close above the 24,250 resistance zone. This makes the next session crucial.

Interestingly, the market rallied despite several negative factors. Crude oil jumped around 2% toward $95, geopolitical tensions remained elevated, and the recent CAS manipulation controversy continued to raise questions about market structure and volatility.

Market Bias

Bearish – Sell on Rally

A sustained move above 24,250–24,400 could strengthen the short-term bullish momentum. However, failure to hold above 24,250 may trigger another round of profit booking and push Nifty toward 24,100 and potentially 23,800.

Bank Nifty Outlook: HDFC Bank Supports the Index, PSU Banks Weaken

Bank Nifty closed at 57,496, gaining 256 points during the session. The index initially benefited from strength in HDFC Bank, following news related to LIC receiving approval to increase its stake in the bank to 9.99%.

However, the broader banking market remained mixed. After a strong recovery from recent declines, PSU banking stocks witnessed profit booking during the afternoon session, limiting Bank Nifty's upside and keeping the index relatively weak toward the close.

This divergence between private banks and PSU banks will be important to watch in the next trading session.

Market Bias

Bearish – Sell on Rally

Bank Nifty needs a decisive breakout above 57,850 to improve the short-term structure. If it fails to cross this resistance, profit booking could bring the index back toward 57,150–56,850.

Final Market View

The August 20 session delivered a powerful rebound, with Nifty gaining 154 points and India VIX falling sharply. The end of the 12-session previous-day-high failure streak is technically significant.

But until Nifty gives a strong and sustained breakout above 24,250–24,400, the broader setup remains cautious to bearish.

For August 21, the strategy remains “Sell on Rally” unless Nifty and Bank Nifty convincingly clear their key resistance levels.
