Nifty 50 August Expiry Outlook: CAS Green Candle Hides Sector Weakness as VIX Rises

The first August monthly expiry since SEBI implemented the Closing Auction Session (CAS) is set for tomorrow, and today’s market action showed a notable divergence between the broader market and the closing-session move.

Before the CAS period, most major sectors closed in the red, while Nifty IT was the key sector to finish positive. Broad-based weakness across major sectors suggests that underlying market strength remains limited despite the late recovery in Nifty.

Nifty 50 August Expiry Outlook: CAS Green Candle Hides Sector Weakness as VIX Rises

During the closing auction session, Nifty formed another strong green CAS candle, adding around 40 points from the pre-CAS level. While the move lifted the official closing price, the broader sector performance remained weak.

Nifty 50 Open Interest Signals Resistance

The derivatives setup also points toward caution. Fresh 24,300 Call (24,300 CE) open-interest buildup of around 2.16 crore shares indicates strong positioning around the 24,300 level. This could act as an important resistance zone during the August monthly expiry.

At the same time, India VIX gained around 3%, highlighting increased market fear and volatility ahead of expiry. The combination of rising VIX, weak sector participation and heavy call positioning suggests that the late CAS rally should be viewed cautiously rather than as a clear sign of renewed bullish momentum.

August Monthly Expiry: Watch the CAS Candle

Tomorrow’s expiry will be particularly important because it will be the first August monthly expiry after the introduction of the CAS mechanism. Traders should closely monitor the final 15-minute closing auction session.

If another strong green CAS candle appears despite weak market breadth, the divergence between the regular session and the closing auction will remain an important market signal. Conversely, a red CAS candle tomorrow could indicate that selling pressure is finally appearing during the closing process.

Key Levels for Nifty 50

Resistance: 24,300
Support: 24,000

Overall, the market structure remains cautious. Weakness across major sectors, higher India VIX and significant 24,300 CE positioning suggest that traders should avoid interpreting the late-session 40-point CAS rise in isolation.

August monthly expiry could bring higher volatility, and the CAS closing candle may provide an important clue about the next market direction.
