Has the New SEBI CAS Rule Changed Market Psychology?

Stay cautious on the long side.

After the implementation of the new SEBI Closing Auction Session (CAS) rules, the market witnessed two consecutive sessions with 200+ point rallies during the closing auction. Naturally, many market participants—especially retail traders—have started assuming that such strong last-minute green closes will become the new normal.

That expectation itself could become the biggest risk.

If today's session ends with a sharp red candle during the final 15 minutes, it would immediately challenge that belief and remind traders that the closing auction can move in either direction. Markets rarely reward one-sided expectations for long.

The bigger question is this:

If we begin seeing repeated sharp red closing auction moves, will SEBI reconsider or modify the CAS framework?
Or will these moves simply be accepted as part of the new market structure without any explanation?

Another concern is retail positioning. Since the large influx of retail investors after the 2020 COVID bull market, many newer participants have experienced markets that frequently recover into the close. If that confidence starts to break, sentiment could change very quickly.

At the same time, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have maintained an aggressive short bias for nearly two years. If retail confidence weakens while FIIs continue to hold heavy short positions, the market could become vulnerable to a much sharper correction.

No one can predict whether that will happen. However, if investors blindly expect every closing auction to produce a strong green candle, they may be underestimating the risks. Market confidence is built over time—but it can disappear much faster when expectations are disappointed.

The key takeaway is simple: Don't assume the closing auction will always support prices. Be prepared for both green and red closing moves under the new CAS system.
